1. Damage Caused Directly by Pests Isn’t Covered
If insects, rodents, slugs, snails, or other vermin (except possums) cause damage — for example:
- Rats or mice chewing through your fascia or wiring
- Birds nesting in gutters and blocking water flow
- Snails or insects damaging insulation or downpipes
— your insurer will not pay to repair or replace the part of your home that the pests physically damaged.
This is standard because pest damage is considered a maintenance issue — something you can prevent with inspections, maintenance, and pest-proofing.
2. But Resulting Sudden Accidents Are Covered
If that pest damage causes a sudden and accidental event that damages other parts of your house, that event is usually covered.
For example:
